2007 Special
Event Station
2-3 June 2007 USS Razorback North Little Rock, AR Call sign: N5R |
Razorback is a nickname for the Finback
Whale. The Finback is often called a Razorback because of its distinctive
ridges between the dorsal fin and tail.
The Razorback is also the name of a submarine,
the USS Razorback (SS-394), to be precise. It is the premier artifact
on display at the Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum in North Little Rock,
Arkansas.
The Razorback is a Balao class submarine
of the Sandlance variant. Her keel was laid in September 1943, and she
was commissioned on April 3rd, 1944. She was in Pacific action during
World War II and was selected to be on site in Tokyo Bay at the signing
of the terms of surrender, ending the war with Japan. She saw service
during the Cold War. She participated in the "SWORDFISH" nuclear weapons
test of 1962. She received five battle stars for her patrols during
the Vietnam era. She was decommissioned in 1970 and was transferred
to the Turkish Navy where it was recommissioned as the Muratreis. It
continued to serve in the Turkish Navy as a front line submarine until
she was decommissioned in 2001. In recognition of the fact that this
ship served two counties today Razorback flies both the U.S. and Turkish
flags.

Radio room |
The Razorback was the site of the USPS
Amateur Radio Net's special event station in 2007. The event was part
of the National Safe Boating Committee's National Safe Boating Week
campaign. Operators included members of US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla
15-08. Together they emphasized the message "WEAR IT" to encourage boaters
to wear their life jackets for boating safety. The station operated
on 2 & 3 June with the special call sign N5R. The frequencies were 7.267,
14.267, 21.367, and 28.367 MHz. Amateur radio operators who worked
the station are encouraged to send for a commemorative certificate by
sending a 9 by 12 SASE to P/Stf/C Donald Stark, JN, N3HOW at 65 Stark
Spur, Eighty Four, PA 15330-2547.
USPS radio events have created quite a presence in the amateur radio community. Special thanks to Lt Ian Campbell, P, WA5OFT, for coordinating this event.
