District 1 is comprised of
eleven Squadrons
in a geographic area that stretches from Westerly Rhode Island on Long Island
Sound to Milford Connecticut, and inland to Springfield Massachusetts.
Organized in 1914, USPS
is a non profit, educational organization dedicated to making boating safer
and more enjoyable by teaching classes in seamanship, navigation and related
subjects. Our members are boating families who contribute to their communities
by promoting safe boating through education. We enjoy participating with
our fellow members on the water and in the classroom. USPS has over 20,000
members organized into more than 300 squadrons and 29 districts across the
country and in some US territories. USPS is America's largest non-profit
boating organization and has been honored by three US presidents for its
civic contributions.
One of the important missions
of the district is to provide leadership for activities that cross squadron
boundaries. These activities include our holiday party, our summer
cruises, sail race, rendezvous, and poker run. The Vessel safety Check
(VSC) and Co-Op Charting activities are also supported and promoted at the
district level.
The District bridge is made
up of volunteers elected from members of the squadrons. They include the
District Commander, five Lieutenant Commanders and many committee volunteers
all from within the squadrons. As leaders at this level they support, promote,
and enhance the functions at the squadron level.
The District meets three
times a year: one Council meeting and two District Conferences. During both
Council and Conference meetings, the latest national information is passed
along to the squadron management, and seminars and educational workshops
are provided for both the squadron management and members. In addition,
at the all-day conferences in the spring and fall, we conclude the business
of the district including setting budgets, reporting progress, and electing
district officers.
