The Order of Mariners is an honorary distinction made by District 26 to recognize exceptional service and achievement by individual members. Those so honored receive a certificate of membership and the Order insignia, which is a silver star lapel pin. To qualify as mariner, a member must have earned 15 Merit Marks and attained Educational Proficiency Status (Advanced Piloting plus three electives). These awards are presented to recipients at the District's Cruise & Rendezvous Awards Ceremony or at the recipient's squadron meeting. The Order was first activated in 1981 to promote the essential principles of USPS. Its provisos have been modified over time to reflect changing emphasis in the organization. Initially, there were three classes of membership: Mariner, Commodore, and Nautic. "C" after the year represents Commodore status and an "N" designates Nautic status prior to those designations being discontinued in 1992 by the Order. Administration of the Order was relinquished to the District 26 Bridge at that time.
