Seamanship
The Seamanship course is a
natural first/next step in building a foundation for confidence and competence for safe
and enjoyable boating on the water. It extends the knowledge and skills of the boater in
handling and maneuvering a vessel, either sail or power. The course provides a better
understanding of how boats behave under various conditions including close quarters and
open water operations. Knowledge and skills are increased in the areas of anchoring,
emergencies, rules of the road, and marlinspike/basic knots. An On-The-Water component
enhances the learning experience. Successful completion of the course will also
allow Grand Lake Sail and Power Squadron members to move to higher level courses and hold
elective office.

Piloting
Piloting is the first course in
the sequence of USPS courses on navigation, covering the basics of coastal and inland
navigation. This course focuses on navigation as it is done on recreational boats today
and embraces GPS as a primary navigation tool while covering enough of traditional
techniques so the student will be able to find his/her way even if their GPS fails.

Boating Course
Americas Boating Course
(ABC3) is the introductory boating safety and operation course of the United States Power
Squadron. It is an in-depth course taught to the public by certified instructors of
the Grand Lake Sail & Power Squadron.
The course will be completed in
four to five days. It will include classroom instruction followed by on-the-water
instruction for interested students. The 244 page course manual and CD covers many topics
including docking, leaving a dock, using an anchor, loading and trimming a boat. Also,
learn how to do pivot turns and quick stops (helpful in docking). Proper trailering,
storing and protecting your boat are also subjects to be covered in the comprehensive
course. Learn navigation rules (sometimes referred to as right-of-way rules) to help avoid
collisions, what boat safety equipment is needed on various sizes of boats and how to
handle emergencies that may occur while boating.
A similar course, given by a
commercial boating education firm, would cost several hundred dollars, but the non-profit
USPS and Grand Lake Squadron is offering it for only $40 for both classroom and the
on-the-water instruction. Plus, as an added bonus, it will include an optional 6 month
free membership in United States Power Squadron and the Grand Lake Squadron.
Many boat insurance companies will
offer discounts on boating insurance to boaters who successfully complete the ABC course.
This nationally recognized course also meets the requirement for a safety course for
youths age 12-16 in Oklahoma.

wiring practices, direct current power, alternating current power, galvanic and
stray-current corrosion, lightning protection, and electrical interference. |
Marine Radio
Communications

Cruising and
Cruise Planning
There is something very special about the thrill
of cruising in new waters and the sense of accomplishment upon completing an extended
cruise. To go beyond what most boaters do on a weekend, to go overnight or even a week, or
go marina hopping requires boaters to leave their normal cruising areas and comfort zones.
The Cruising and Cruise Planning course focuses on the planning and preparation necessary
for safe enjoyable extended cruises on both inland and coastal waters. The course covers
the following topics: Cruise Preparation and Planning, Boat and Equipment, Anchors and
Anchoring, Security, Chartering, Cruising Outside the United States, Crew and
Provisioning, Voyage Management, Communications, Navigation, Weather, and Emergencies.
Cost: $50 Members/$58 Non-members |
Instructor
Development Course
Unlike other USPS courses, the Instructor
Development course is not designed to enhance boating skills. Rather, its emphasis
is on enhancing instructor skills. The course has been designed to demonstrate
interactive teaching methods focused on adult learning. |
Engine
Maintenance
The course is ten chapters that
stress the diagnosis of modern systems, while also teaching the basics of engine layout
and operation. Gasoline inboards, outboards, and diesel engines are taught in a way that
reinforces the common aspects of how engines work.
Modern engines offer high
reliability and good performance through the use of computerized systems for fuel delivery
and engine timing. Most of these systems are black boxes that can no longer be
serviced by weekend mechanics with ordinary tools. The EM course covers those repairs that
do-it-yourselfers can still perform, teaches how to diagnose problems that might be beyond
your ability to fix, and how to share information with your mechanic so the right repairs
get performed. The new Engine Maintenance course also covers basic mechanical systems such
as drive systems (propellers), steering systems, and engine controls. The last chapter
discusses solutions you might use to problems that could occur while afloat and away from
a repair facility. Gasoline, diesel, and outboard engines are treated independently in
this chapter.
