Commanders Report - October 2004

Now that the Fall is here Its time to devote to the schedule for the coming year. Quite a few new educational tools have been developed within the last year and have now been passed down to the squadrons to implement. The burden on the educational Department at this time is high due to these changes and we must "give them a go" or else be content with the old methods of presentation and not be competitive. Let me be a little more specific and give a few examples.

I'm still not completely checked out on computers and computerized presentations however that is the way we are headed. Most squadron Bridge Members are required to have a computer to get work done effectively and quickly. For instance, without a computer I would be required to write to National and request a Membership Record. They would then put the record for our squadron together and Mail it to me (snail-mail). I would receive the hard copy and work from that in making copies for those on the Bridge who want copies to perform their job. This generally takes over 2 weeks.

With the computer I send the request to National over Data Base 2000 and my computer almost immediately receives and updated membership list with all the particulars about a member(name, address, phone, e-mail, courses taken, grade, etc). I can then resend this information to any member as necessary. This generally takes 2 days.

Some of the new courses supplied to us from National Headquarters presents a CD with all the overhead transparencies (OHT) for viewing in the classroom. The is quite new to us since we are stocked with hard copies of the OHT's which we make into transparencies to be viewed on a transparency projector. Since we don't have a CD projector we would like to purchase one. (cost about $1000). But a laptop computer is needed to power the projector(cost about $900). This is a significant burden to the squadron and we would greatly appreciate it if any member with either thoughts on how to present this information to our classes or assist us in funding this venture we would like to hear from you. Welcome to the computer Generation!!!!!!

Boating Education is still a priority for us and we will do all possible to provide this service to the public.

Happy fall sailing to you all,

Bob Reeves, Cdr.

Education Report - October 2004

Summer is just about over, and now the education season begins. Our courses got underway in the beginning of September and are proceeding as scheduled

Boat Smart started on the 8 Sept. at Foran H/S with 9 students. Bob Post is instructing. The course lasted 3 days(once a week) and all students took the final exam and passed. The Chart Smart Course to be given on Oct 6th was cancelled by the school. Reason…. No registration !!!

Hank Chmielewski started the Seamanship Course on Sept. 27 with 3 students This course is being held in Room 116 in the Egan Center which finally opened after being under construction to repair fire damage that occurred last Spring. The new 2 module course is being used the modules being Seamanship and Boat Handling.

Engine Maintenance (Module 2) is underway with George Buffinton as the instructor. George finished the Ist Module last spring and the class suggested that the 2nd Module should be given in the Fall. That's what we have done, however, at the sacrifice of several students. Seems that the students schedule changes which conflict with the class dates. We have to present 2 Module courses concurrent or we'll loose students.

Boat Smart at the Sound School for 12 Oct. had to be cancelled again. Seems they had trouble with their printer in getting out the course advertising. We'll hang in there with this venture and hope the school gets off of "top dead center" and classes resume on a scheduled basis with at least 5 students per class. The scheduled Chart Smart class remain as scheduled.

Piloting is set to begin on Nov. 30 with George sender at the helm. If you wish to take this excellent new course give me a call. This course introduces you to GPS which is now the primary technique for navigation.

Right now we're off and sailing along our predetermined track. Hope everyone enjoyed their summer and hope to see you in class.
