A Little History

The Mountaineer Power Squadron (MPS) was founded in 1957.  It is a consolidation of two older squadrons, Morgantown Power Squadron and Fairmont Power Squadron.  MPS has about 65 members in more than five counties.  Monthly membership meetings rotate between Clarksburg, Fairmont, and Morgantown, West Virginia.  Typically, annual boating activities are scheduled on Cheat Lake, Tygart Lake, Stonewall Jackson Reservoir and the Monongahela River.  We are a private, non-profit, non-governmental, and non-military organization.  Members (minimum age is 16 years) are United States citizens, men and women, who are socially compatible and have a common love and appreciation for pleasure boating, power and/or sail.  Boat ownership is not a requirement.  There are no barriers to membership on grounds of race, religion, or ethnic background.  As indicated on the sides of the triangle, our objectives are civic service, social activities, and self-education.

About Joining

USPS/Mountaineer Power Squadron Membership is by application, with prospective members being required to present evidence that they have preparation equivalent to passing the USPS Boating course. This is generally done by taking our public boating class, but may also be fulfilled by presentation of a certificate from another boating course or by passing the course examination.  Contact any of the Officers or Susan Derk.
