VSC - Vessel Safety Check

The VSC program is designed to assist in the voluntary compliance with federal, state, and local recreational boating safety laws.  It is a free check of a vessel's equipment by a certified recreational boater.  Examiners are not law enforcement personnel and inspection results are never given to any law enforcement personnel or agency.  The purpose is one of education and safety to minimize the loss of life, personal injury, property damage, and negative environmental impact.

Vessel safety checks cover all types of recreational boats from kayaks, canoes, personal watercraft to large sail and power vessels.  The review includes such items as personal flotation devices, fire extinguishers, emergency signals, navigation lights, horns, and properly displayed number-registration-documentation.

Ithaca Sail & Power Squadron and Coast Guard Auxiliary certified examiners cover local marinas most weekends throughout the boating season.  Upon a successful inspection, the boat owner will receive a written report and a decal indicating that your boat has complied with safety equipment requirements.

To find out when an examiner will be at your marina or to arrange a Vessel Safety Check, email by clicking on: IS&PS Vessel Safety Check Coordinator.

Complete the check successfully and receive a decal like the one below for everyone to see. This does not exempt you from law enforcement boarding, but you will know you are prepared to make this a positive encounter.
