What is USPS?
Organized in 1914, the United States Power Squadrons (USPS) is a non profit, educational organization dedicated to making boating safer and more enjoyable by teaching classes in seamanship, navigation and related subjects. Our members are boating families who contribute to their communities by promoting safe boating through education. We enjoy participating with our fellow members on the water and in the classroom.
USPS has some 60,000 members organized into 450 squadrons across the country and in some US territories. USPS is America's largest non-profit boating organization and has been honored by three US presidents for its civic contributions.
USPS is organized into 33 different districts. The Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) Power Squadron is part of District 21 (D21). The geographical area covered by D21 includes the eastern half of Texas and the western three fourths of Louisiana. Currently, D21 consists of ten squadrons in Texas and four in Louisiana. An eleventh squadron in Texas is in the process of being formed. Each district and squadron has its own burgee (flag). Social Activities and Fellowship
The LRGV Squadron hosts several functions throughout the year, both on the water and on shore. We have fun and fellowship at all of these events. Land based activities such as Search and Recovery of Geodetic Markers, Monthly Dinner Meetings, and rendezvous (parties). Often times our rendezvous are held in a location where you can come by land or by water.Water based activities include raft-ups, fleet review and blessing of the fleet, hands-on training for skills on the water, fireworks viewing from the water, and other activities.
We also have an unofficial, fun social activity called “Sunday Morning Breakfast at Marchans” in Port Isabel. Many of our members just “show up” and the tables get pushed together as more and more show up. By land or by water, this is a great way to visit with fellow members and spend a pleasant Sunday morning.
