The locally chartered
unit of the United States Power Squadrons, a nationally
recognized recreational boating organization, will once
again offer the America's
Boating Course, a comprehensive instruction for
novice and experienced boaters, power boaters, kayakers,
canoeists, fishermen and sailing enthusiasts.
The course, which is
taught entirely by volunteer members of the Squadron,
will begin at 7:00 PM Monday, March 10th at the BUCK
FOREMMAN COMMUNITY CENTER at 265 Main Street in
Portland.
It will include successive Monday
evening sessions culminating in a final exam.
Successful completion of this course qualifies the
student to apply for the State mandated Safe Boating
Certificate required of all operators of boats under
power in Connecticut.
Included in the course are:
Safety equipment needed to comply with Coast Guard
regulations, instruction in the Rules of the Road,
Markers and Signals, the Mariner’s Compass and its use,
Navigational Charts and Personal Watercraft Safety as
well as an introduction to Global Positioning Systems
(GPS) equipment.,
The charge for this course is $60
per person.
This fee includes all course materials,
exam fee and a six month trial membership in the
United States Power Squadrons which permits the member
to further his or her education with advanced courses in
Seamanship, Piloting, Navigation, Sail, Weather, Engine
Maintenance and Marine Electronics.

required. An
